EarthQuaker Devices Sun O))) HalfLife Octave Distortion + Boost Pedal | No Limit Guitar Co, Idaho Falls

Born from the writing sessions for Sunn O)))'s Life Metal album, the EarthQuaker Devices HalfLife distills the exact front-end tone-shaping chain that Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson used to drive their vintage Sunn O))) Model T amplifiers into overload ecstasy. Combining a big-box rodent-inspired distortion with a three-way clipping switch, a blendable all-discrete analog octave-up circuit, and a clean MOSFET boost, HalfLife is the mass-production successor to the limited-edition cast-iron HalfLife Fer MMXXV. Whether you're chasing crushing low-end saturation or transcendent, swelling octave fuzz reminiscent of a classic Super Fuzz, HalfLife is built to push a 100-watt tube stack into either holy dream or apostate nightmare — your call.

Product Overview

HalfLife's "Amplitude" distortion side is faithfully modeled after the classic "White Face" distortion circuit — a big-box, rodent-inspired design renowned for thick, saturated gain. The only modification from the original circuit lies in the clipping section, where HalfLife introduces a three-way switch offering tonal flexibility the original never had. The OpAmp position removes diodes entirely for a full, grinding Op Amp assault at maximum volume and gain. The Asymm position uses two silicon diodes and one LED in an asymmetrical configuration, delivering a slightly compressed, smooth crunch reminiscent of an overdriven valve amplifier. The Symm position is the stock double silicon diode configuration — the classic, familiar tone the original circuit is known for. A Filter control with a frequency response from roughly 500Hz to 30kHz and a Distortion control offering approximately +60dB of gain round out the distortion section's tonal range.

The Octave section is an all-discrete analog full-wave rectifier circuit positioned at the input of the signal chain — turning the Octave knob clockwise blends in the octave-up effect progressively, transforming HalfLife from a straightforward distortion pedal into a swelling, raging fuzz reminiscent of a classic Super Fuzz at full blend. Because this is a genuinely analog octave circuit, it's monophonic by nature and performs best playing single notes above the twelfth fret on the neck pickup — chords with the analog octave engaged will produce a clanging, chaotic character rather than clean harmonized tones, which is part of the circuit's distinctive personality rather than a flaw to engineer around. An Octave EXP jack accepts any expression pedal for hands-free, real-time control over the octave blend — opening up wild octave swells mid-riff that would be impossible to execute with hand-operated knob control alone.

The "Magnitude" section is a simple, all-discrete MOSFET booster designed purely to drive preamp tubes into saturation — a 100% clean, high-impedance boost that adds minimal coloration of its own while delivering substantial output to push a tube amp into its own natural overdrive. The signal path runs Octave into Distortion into Boost, and critically, the octave/distortion section and the booster section operate from independent footswitches — the right footswitch activates the octave distortion, and the left footswitch activates the booster — allowing either section to be used alone or together depending on the tonal goal.

HalfLife is built with EarthQuaker's Flexi-Switch Technology — relay-based, true bypass switching that supports both standard latching operation (tap once to engage, tap again to bypass) and momentary operation (hold the footswitch down for as long as the effect is needed, release to bypass) from the same switches. Because the switching is relay-based, the pedal requires power to pass signal at all times.

Ideal For

  • Doom, drone, and sludge metal guitarists chasing the exact tonal lineage of Sunn O)))'s Life Metal-era recording sessions
  • Players running vintage tube amplifiers who want a front-end distortion and boost chain designed specifically to drive tubes into overload
  • Experimental guitarists who want a genuinely analog, monophonic octave-up effect for swelling, chaotic fuzz textures
  • Performers who want expression pedal control over octave blend for hands-free, dynamic swells during performance
  • Players who want independent footswitch control over distortion and boost sections to use them separately or stacked together
  • Guitarists in Idaho Falls looking for a collaboratively designed, artist-driven pedal with genuine sonic lineage to one of metal's most influential recent albums

Key Features

Big-Box Rodent-Inspired "White Face" Distortion with 3-Way Clipping
Faithfully modeled after the classic White Face distortion circuit, HalfLife's distortion section adds a three-way clipping switch — OpAmp for full grinding assault, Asymm for smooth valve-like crunch, and Symm for the classic stock tone — providing far more tonal flexibility than the original circuit offered.

All-Discrete Analog Octave-Up Circuit
A full-wave rectifier octave circuit blends in progressively as the Octave knob turns clockwise, transforming the pedal from straightforward distortion into swelling, Super Fuzz-style octave fuzz — genuinely analog and monophonic, performing best on single notes above the twelfth fret on the neck pickup.

Independent MOSFET Clean Boost
The "Magnitude" section is a 100% clean, all-discrete MOSFET booster with minimal tonal coloration of its own, delivering substantial output specifically designed to push vintage tube amplifiers into natural preamp saturation.

Independent Footswitch Control
Separate footswitches for the octave/distortion section and the booster section allow either to be engaged alone or stacked together, giving players complete control over how the signal path is used in any given moment.

Expression Pedal Control for Octave Blend
The Octave EXP jack accepts any expression pedal for real-time, hands-free control over the octave blend — enabling dramatic octave swells mid-performance that aren't possible with manual knob adjustment.

Flexi-Switch Technology
Relay-based true bypass switching supports both standard latching operation and momentary (hold-to-engage) operation from the same footswitches, giving players flexible control over how each section engages and disengages.

Artist Collaboration and Heritage
Designed in collaboration with Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson, HalfLife represents the mass-production successor to the limited-edition, cast-iron HalfLife Fer MMXXV, with artwork by Stephen O'Malley and illustration by Savage Pencil.
